I just want to publicly thank Lisa and Lee for their recent purchase of life energy mandala #158. I feel very honored that it will grace the walls of their new home together in Dallas. Lisa has recently gotten a job teaching film there so they will be leaving us for a bit, (at least I selfishly hope it is only a bit).

I finished this piece yesterday. I am not sure how I feel about it. It is the second piece like it, and I let it go it's own way, but I think I like the first one better.
I think I like the more realistic flowers rather than these designed lotus flowers.
It is a step though.

group show at studio 2 gallery

So both Leon and I have been accepted into this juried exhibit at the studio 2 gallery.
It wasn't hard, our friend and fellow artist Mo Scollan, (former gallery owner of the 2040 gallery), served as the guest curator.
If you have never been to this gallery check it out. It is on South Lamar, right next to yogayoga south and Holland photo. Tina Weitz runs the show over there and she is doing a great job.

The opening reception for this exhibit will be on Saturday, February 27th, 6:30-9:30pm.
There will also be a written word event at the gallery on Saturday, March 13th at 5pm.

wildflower center still lifes

I took a trip out to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center on Friday. I wanted to check out the exhibition space and meet Joseph Hammer. He is the individual who has invited me and is organizing the exhibit of my work out which will be presented there next winter.
While I was there I decided to search out new subjects for paintings. I was very excited about the pods I found. Pictured below is a buckeye pod with a few yummy brown-black seeds, and then the vibrant red mountain laurel seeds and pods. Its like a little treasure when you crack open the pods.

Just the other day I was asked to exhibit my paintings at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center! I feel very honored.
In keeping along the lines of the Wildflower Center's mission, I went out this morning and photographed my native Texas Possum Haw tree. I planted it about 5 years ago, and this year it really did it's thing; red berries galore! Everything else in my yard looks horrible after the freeze, but the Possum Haw dropped all it's leaves but held onto it's vibrant red berries. It looks beautiful. I haven't quite figured out how to capture that yet, but I did so some Possum haw berry still lives.

I like January. Things slow down a bit and I can always find more time to paint.
I completed this painting this afternoon. Although I technically started working on it about 2 weeks ago, I feel like it has been in the making for quite some time.
It feels like it is reaching back to when I was 18 years old up through my present 46 years. It has something to do with the connectedness of all things. Visualizing the coming to be.

I just finished this piece this morning. Revisiting ideas from the past. This painting is 16x16 inches, oil on panel. The finish is fairly flat. I think the next one will have some glossy areas and maybe some overlays.

I have this condition, as I imagine many artists do, that to feel completely happy and content, I must produce, something, anything. Give me a gum wrapper and I will happily spend some time creating a little sculpture. So I have learned from experience that it is best for me to bring the supplies I will need to create while I am traveling. We are just about finished with our 3 weeks in Hawai'i and I have these collages to share. I brought along the paper, glue and knife and scavenged for the collage material. Turned out to be the perfect travel art.

Leon was away and work has slowed down for the summer, so I had a lot of time on my hands last week, (heaven, I barely left the house). I started and finished this small 12x12 inch painting of table grapes. I am enjoying the challenge of painting sun flare, and the out of focus, pushed right up against the lens transparencies. I might put this one in the women and their work red hot dot sale in September.

I just finished this 30x30 inch oil on panel painting this morning. When I first began the process of creating the image, I wasn't quite sure what I was attracted to about it. After working and sitting with it for many hours I had many thoughts.

It's a strong image, and maybe not quite as obvious as some of my previous paintings. Most definitely feminine.

Here I have focused on the bloom as it has fallen. Past it's glorious prime, but still vibrant, gushing fourth it's seed and at the same time beginning its decay back to the earth.

I enjoy how the water serves to make the colors more vibrant and simultaneously hastens the decay. How the bloom is so open palmed, surrendering gracefully. How the sharp detail of the seeds dissolves into the blurriness of all around it, visualizing life energy as form becomes formlessness.

Dharma Yoga's new studio

The yoga studio where I most often practice, Dharma Yoga, has moved to a new location. It's a bigger space and as an added bonus, right across the street from the Wheatsville food co-op. One of the things that originally drew me to Dharma Yoga was the space itself, adorned with Tibetan thangkas, Quan Yin, a statue of Buddha, candles, and now in this new space, even a painting of my own. Dharma Yoga offers a yoga practice that emphasizes body, mind and spirit. All the teachers are great, and with the opening of the new space, more classes have been added.

Ampersand Art Panels flyer

I'm excited. Ampersand Art Panels, which are produced here in Austin, have sponsored me. They have created this flyer that I suppose they will have available at stores and hand out at conventions, etc.. It is a great product so I am happy to be a part of this.

pomegranates

Looks like it might be a good year in Austin for the pomegranates. All my favorite trees are just loaded. If we can get just a little bit more rain, they might even mature into big beautiful red things, let's hope so. I shot these at my friend and neighbor, Leah's house. Got a few that look like they might make good paintings. More later.
